Please join us at our Fall Concert on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 pm at the Community United Methodist Church, 777 Miramontes St., Half Moon Bay.
The CCO, led by Music Director and Conductor Dr. Howard E. Lee, will feature Josef Rheinberger’s 2nd Organ Concerto, performed on CUMC’s beautiful digital organ. Certainly, Rheinberger could not have envisioned such an instrument when he composed this lovely piece in 1894, but we think he would have been pleased by its amazing sound…and performer! Dr. Angela Kraft Cross, MD, a San Francisco Bay Area organist and composer, will be our guest soloist.
The concert will conclude with Johannes Brahms’ 1st Symphony, loved by both musicians and audiences. Brahms’ work has often been compared to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, as both are filled with stunning melodies and great emotion. However, Brahms was well-known for being his own worst critic. He scoffed at being compared to the great Beethoven. By Brahms’ account, it took nearly 20 years to “finish” his Symphony #1 to his satisfaction. The classical music world has always breathed a collective sigh of relief that his great work did not end up–like so many of Brahms’ compositions–tossed in the fireplace by the composer himself, often in a fit of frustration. We hope to see you at the concert!
