HMB Optometry Family Eye Care is a private practice company in Half Moon Bay, CA. Our team of optometrists uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat a wide range of eye conditions, including dry eye and myopia management, and offers a full range of eyewear products to complement individual styles and needs.

Role Description

The Optician position requires the candidate to work on-site at HMB Optometry Family Eye Care in Half Moon Bay, CA.  As the Optician, you will be one of the main faces representing HMB Optometry and a key communicator for the optical department. You will be responsible for performing a variety of administrative, optician, and clerical tasks. The candidate must be enthusiastic, warm, outgoing, highly organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, possess excellent communication skills, and be willing to grow with the job. 2 years of experience as an optician is required. 

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • 2+ years of experience as an optician required
  • MUST be able to work Tuesday evenings until 7:30 pm, and a minimum of two Saturdays a month that match the doctor’s schedule, in addition to normal office hours. Please do NOT apply if you cannot fulfill these two requirements. 
  • Spanish-speaking is preferred
  • Friendly, customer service-oriented attitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Google Sheets and Docs, cloud-based EHR 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Ability to remain calm, collected, and patient in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information at all times
  • Must be a self-starter and team player. Must be able to be self-reliant to use resources to find the best solution, answers, and be willing to ask for help when needed. 
  • Show initiative to perform daily tasks and prioritize what is best for patient care and the well-being of the office 
  • Strong ability to provide suggestions for optimized workflow in the office

Duties:

  • Greet patients 
  • Support patients in frame and lens selection
  • Expert in lenses, coatings, and optical add-ons
  • Stay up to date with new releases, out-of-stock items
  • Expert in fitting frames to each patient 
  • Expert in vision insurance verification and billing 
  • Verify lab invoices, lens prescriptions, and order details before dispensing glasses to patients 
  • Expert in troubleshooting patients’ lens issues 
  • Track and manage frame orders
  • Manage Optical labs’ progress with regular orders, lab errors, remakes, and warranty replacements 
  • Adjust pricing of lenses and add-ons based on updated pricing lists with labs, including tariff price increases
  • Develop a knowledge base and educate patients based on training materials and resources on topics such as Dry Eye and Myopia Management
  • Train new contact lens wearers 
  • Data entry
  • Manage Frame Inventory 

General additional duties may include: 

  • Answer and return patient and vendor calls
  • Schedule appointments
  • Maintain patient records 
  • Perform prescreen testing for Doctors
  • Maintain a clean office and exam rooms
  • Perform additional technical tasks as needed to support the clinic


Rate of pay will be determined by experience: $24.00 – $30 per hour

Additional compensation: paid sick time and vision care. Health benefits and PTO are available for full-time employees only
