Organizational Overview

The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside (BGCC) is a multi-faceted organization serving elementary, middle and high school youth during out-of-school time.  We offer a school-based program at Cunha Intermediate School for both elementary and middle school youth, a drop-in center for Teens, manage the Cunha After School Athletics programs, partner to support Coastside sports program and manage sports facilities in partnership with Cabrillo Unified School District.  Our Club offers dynamic programs including academic support, leadership development, sports and recreation for members ages 6-18.  Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of young people by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, and belonging.

We are currently hiring for Youth Development Professionals — a team member committed to safety and student success helping elementary, middle and high school students succeed academically, emotionally, and capable of problem-solving and troubleshooting on a day-to-day basis. This is a part-time position.

Youth Development Professionals

Key Roles:

  • Maintain a positive Boys & Girls Club culture, with high energy, strong teamwork, and effective collaboration with other staff.
  • Oversee safety of Club members, including supervision during inside learning, outside activities, and entry/exit.
  • Assist with all aspects of homework — accessing assignments, completing homework, checking grades and accessing school platforms when needed.
  • Organize and lead a range of activities for members that are fun, engaging, instructional and that develop team building skills.
  • Ensure inclusion of all members and encourage their participation in a variety of program areas/activities.
  • Respect and recognize members for their efforts.
  • Provide guidance to members; act as role model.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment including daily cleaning responsibilities.
  • Build positive relationships with parents, school personnel, volunteers and fellow colleagues.
  • Exercise sound decision making, problem-solving skills, and restorative justice practices in resolving club members’ needs or issues.
  • As part of our staff team, identify day-to-day needs and areas of improvement for the Club.
  • Follow protocol when completing incident reports. Advise supervisor when incident protocol is activated.
  • Participate and demonstrate leadership in Special Events, Staff Huddles and team training.
  • Attend all required trainings and participate in monthly staff meetings.
  • Ensure equipment is in good condition and ensure members are instructed in proper and safe us of equipment.
  • Assume other duties as assigned

Experience and Skills

  • Experience working with young people and ability to showcase a positive and upbeat demeanor.
  • Knowledge of the Coastside community and especially the Cabrillo Unified school system helpful.
  • High school degree (or equivalent) and commitment to helping students access K-12 and higher education.
  • Understanding of the developmental needs of young people.
  • Strong oral communication skills. Ability to promote, encourage and engage members in program participation.
  • Ability to problem-solve during day-to-day Club activities. Ability to make sound, independent judgement when unexpected circumstances arise.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth
  • Ability to engage respectfully with various groups including youth, public, parents, co-workers and school personnel.
  • Ability to deal effectively with members including discipline issues.
  • Ability to pass required background checks.
  • Willingness to adhere to COVID safety guidelines.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Timing

  • Our After School program is open every day after school. Shift times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:45 to 6:15 and Thursdays from 1:45 to 6:15.  Additional hours are also available when applicable.
  • Team members need to be able to work at least two shifts a week.
  • We are hiring for positions that begin August 15, 2024.
  • We do need some “on call” substitute workers as well.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range is $17-20/per hour and dependent upon skill and experience.
