Big Wave Project

The Big Wave Project is creating housing and a hub for community connections, continuing education programs and access to job training and opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  Construction is underway for this project in Princeton Harbor which will include a 50,000 sq. ft. residence, and a 10,000 sq. ft. courtyard adjacent to the existing Big Wave Farm. The ground floor will be occupied by One Step Beyond, Inc., who will provide a Culinary and Catering Academy and a Day Program for adults with special needs throughout the Bay Area.

Adults with special needs face extraordinary barriers to achieving what everyone wants and deserves:  independence, opportunity and community. Over 55,000 Bay Area individuals have IDD, of which 55% are adults.  Over 80% live at home with their families.  Many are isolated and lonely.  The dire shortage of housing for this vulnerable population creates a crisis as their family members age and can no longer care for them.

Big Wave will be a place to thrive – a hub for the Bay Area IDD community to gather, make connections, and forge friendships. The campus will foster opportunities for individuals with disabilities to interact with local and regional community members and corporations.  It will also be a place to grow – the Big Wave campus will offer unique opportunities to residents and non-resident adults.  The Big Wave Farm already hosts 1,600+ adults with IDD annual from day programs throughout the Bay Area.  Participants help plant and harvest herbs, vegetables, and lavender, work in the greenhouse and care for the chickens.  Guided by educators, they learn about gardening, science and nutrition and build vocational skills and friendships.
