To address growing challenges with the cost of living on the coast for local workers, the City Council will host a workshop November 30 at 6:00 p.m., to discuss a potential increase to the minimum wage beyond the Consumer Price Index (CPI) marker for 2024.

Governor Gavin Newsom recently approved two significant increases in wages: one new law will raise the minimum wage for all health care workers in the state to $25 an hour by 2028. The other new law increases minimum hourly pay for fast-food workers to $20 an hour, starting in April.

Effective January 1, 2024, the minimum wage within Half Moon Bay will increase to $17.01 per hour based on the August-to August Consumer Price Index (CPI) for San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose.

The Council was already intending to explore potential changes and, considering the State’s recent actions, feels it’s the right time to review Half Moon Bay’s minimum wage ordinance to ensure equity and fairness in the local minimum wage structure.
