Working on the Coastside

City of HMB | Coastal Trail & Poplar Pedestrian Pathway Construction/Repair Projects

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Please be aware of two construction/repair projects along the coastline: culvert repair under the Coastal Trail, and asphalt crack seal repair on the Poplar Pedestrian Pathway.

The City has contracted with Half Moon Bay Grading and Paving to repair an existing culvert, headwall, and outfall that travels underneath the Coastal Trail approximately 1,000 feet north of Poplar Street, in line with Myrtle Street. The culvert outfalls just west of the Coastal Trail and has experienced severe erosion due to the major winter storms.

The scope of work includes redirecting the Coastal Trail approximately 30 feet inland of its existing location. This project is necessary to avoid substantial trail closures in the future due to increasing impacts of climate change. Work on this project is underway and is anticipated to continue through Saturday, September 30, 2023. If in the project area, please proceed with caution. Certain construction activities will require temporary trail closure/detours due to safety concerns, so please anticipate using alternative routes.

Additionally, the City has contracted with the same company to perform crack sealing of the existing cracks along the Poplar Pedestrian Pathway located parallel to Poplar Street west of Railroad Street. Crack sealing is an important step in maintaining the existing pathway in anticipation of future rain events.

Construction on this project is expected to start within the next couple of weeks and last through the end of September. Be sure to proceed with caution through this construction area, and anticipate using alternative routes.
