Charles Forrester: Resonances

M Stark Gallery presents a solo exhibition of watercolor painting by Charles Forrester: Resonances.

Charles Forrester is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute where he studied printmaking and ceramics. There, he used watercolor painting as a tool to make studies for aquatints which can resemble watercolor. He chose to study printmaking because he was drawn to its rigorous linear process, requiring a well thought out plan before execution. After graduating from SFAI he found himself without access to an etching press, but he chose to continue with watercolors, a demanding medium in itself. He favors blue because it absorbs vision and light, and has physical properties that bestow both calming and energizing properties. Forrester uses mathematic sequences to inspire and structure his compositions. The number used in the title of a painting and brought to life on the paper in a complex design has personal meaning to the artist and is chosen to resonate with the viewer in concert with the artwork’s formal elements.
