Ocean View Lodge 143 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded in Half Moon Bay in 1868. As a benevolent society, the Lodge played an important role in early Half Moon Bay. Part of the IOOF mission is to ‘visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.’ In pursuit of these goals, our Lodge operated the Odd Fellows Cemetery on San Mateo Road, built the Ocean View Plaza senior housing on Main Street, and has provided education assistance to local youth.
As a fraternal organization, the lodge also played a large role in the social life of the early settlers to the Coastside.
Ocean View Lodge continues to contribute to local community organizations, as well as to needs around the world. Besides awarding scholarships to outstanding Half Moon Bay High School seniors every year, the Lodge donates money and time to numerous causes.
