In 2022, tourism’s recovery accelerated beyond earlier projections. California’s tourism economy grew by 32% in 2022 and is poised to set new records this year for visitor spending, employment and tax generation.

According to Visit California’s 2022 Economic Impact Report:

  • $134.4 billion travel spending: This was a 31.7% increase over 2021 that brought spending 93% of the way to pre-pandemic levels.
  • $1.1 million jobs: The travel sector added 157,000 jobs in 2022, bringing employment 94% of the way back from devastating pandemic losses.
  • $11.9 billion tax revenue: State and local tax revenue generated by the travel industry increased 21.6% — creating an average $906 savings for every household!

These new findings come as the industry celebrates California Tourism Month, which was designated by the Legislature in 2016 to highlight tourism’s economic and lifestyle benefits to all Californians.
