Coastside County Water District started flushing its public water system from El Granada to Half Moon Bay. Flushing is something that is done routinely by water utilities, but due to a recent drought and water shortage the District had to defer this maintenance.

Flushing refers to moving water through sections of the water distribution system to flush out sediment that has accumulated. Methodically moving water through the system in sections at an increased flow rate is the most effective method. The increased flow rate is accomplished by opening up fire hydrants and closing valves.

Routinely flushing the water distribution system can improve the color, odor, and taste of tap water. While the district flushes the water system, customers may experience discolored water.

What to do if you experience discolored water from your faucets.

If you notice discolored water at your faucet, don’t use hot water until your water clears. This includes hot water settings on your clothes washer and dishwasher.

If you experience discolored water, wait a couple of hours then flush your water supply piping on your property. If you come home after 3:00pm and discover discolored water you can flush immediately.

Go to the first hose bib on your property before the water enters your house and turn on the water for a couple of minutes until the water runs clear. Then go into your home and turn on the cold water at a tub spout or at the kitchen faucet until the water runs clear. It should only take a couple of minutes. If you have a two or three-story home, go to the top story and run the cold water.

If you have any questions or you aren’t able to get clear water, call the District at (650) 726-4405. Instructions are also available on our website.
