M Stark Gallery presents Gyöngy Laky: Invent

M Stark Gallery presents Invent featuring a survey of the work of Gyöngy Laky from 1985 through 2019. On view April 13 through May 26, 2024, with a reception for the artist on Sunday, April 14.

In November 2023, the City of Half Moon Bay announced it will launch the only incubator-through-accelerator program in the nation entirely dedicated to climate resilience and resiliency tech and will attract pre-seed and seed-stage startups with innovative projects in these areas. Laky’s solo show at M Stark Gallery suggests the building blocks of innovation. The piece Chance Encounter (pictured) was commissioned for The Green Issue of The New York Times Magazine in 2008.

Gyöngy Laky is known for taming the inherent irregularity of her organic raw materials into carefully shaped, often hard-edged compositions. Negative space is the co-star of her practice. During her lifetime she has created no less than six highly distinctive bodies of work: drawings in air, grids, vessels, words & letters, signs & symbols, installations, and (textile) abstractions. Her recent work is boldly political, and all her work is highly original.

Laky is the founder of Fiberworks, the Center for the Textile Arts, in Berkeley (1973-1987), and is professor emeritus at UC Davis where she taught for nearly 30 years. Later this year Laky will be showing in with Venice Art Factory, in Venice, Italy, a satellite exhibition of the 2024 Venice Biennale.
