Don Horsley, the stately former law man who became a quietly effective elected leader on the coast, died on Friday at the age of 80. The announcement, which didn’t give the cause of death, came in the form of a social media post from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, where Horsley worked for decades.

Horsley began his lifetime of public service with a stint on the Daly City Police force. In 1972, he began work as a San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputy. In 1993, he was elected to lead the department; it was a job he held for 14 years.
